The United States has a rich history and deep roots in farming. At our founding, 90% of our population derived their income from agriculture.
While farms were generally small and diversified, starting in the 1920s, drastic changes started happening in agriculture. Over the last several decades, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) became the norm, and large, corporate agribusiness began running the majority of farming operations.
As these CAFOs spread across our landscape, small family farms have been squeezed out of the marketplace. We’ve seen a startling and steady decline of farms. According to the USDA, there were 6.8 million U.S. farms in 1935, dropping to only 2.02 million when this decade began.
We believe that preserving family farms and rural communities is critical. Americans for Family Farms is a 501(c)(3) organization working to promote policies that support:
· Strong and vibrant rural communities
· Sustainable food systems
· Opportunities for family farmers
· The availability of healthy food for all
· Responsible farming practices
· Food and environmental justice
We engage in advocacy to ensure that small, independent farmers are able to provide an abundant, healthy food supply to all.
Donna Krudwig began her advocacy work in 2002 after learning of the harsh realities of food production on CAFOs - how the land, workers and animals are mistreated. She realized that these corporations focused on profitability instead of sustainability to the detriment of our communities. Donna was especially saddened by the many stories of hard-working farming families being pushed out of business by large corporations who did not uphold the values that responsible farmers hold dear.
Seeking a better way for the future, she was drawn to advocate for family farms, and the family farmers who work so hard to produce
responsible and nutritious food. Her first advocacy was in 2002 when she campaigned in Florida to help pass legislation to keep pig CAFO’s out of the sunshine state.
Since then Donna has been working with farmers in numerous states to
pass family farmer-friendly laws and
defeat legislation designed to prop up CAFOs.
Donna believes everyone should have access to healthy, sustainable food, and she brings that passion to her role as president of
Americans for Family Farmers.
